Welcome to Blue Mountains Bird Watching.

These pages are dedicated to the various bird species to be seen in the Upper Blue Mountains region in Australia.

This territory lies 100km West of Sydney and includes the towns of Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba, Medlow Bath, Blackheath and Mt. Victoria, in the heart of the 270,000ha Blue Mountains National Park, a World Heritage listed conservation area.

As I write this (December 2001) the site contains comprehensive species lists for each month for the area.

In the future this seed information will grow with the addition of:

  • more observations
  • commentaries by bird observers
  • pictures
  • recordings of bird calls
  • an indication of the rarity of each bird

Given that the current headcount is around 140 different species, and that I'd rather be out there looking at them than editing this site, I've made it as easy as possible for visitors to add their own content.

On each bird's detail page you will find links allowing you to post observations, comments, pictures and sound files. Ultimately I hope we'll build a definitive online altas of birds in the Upper Blue Mountains.

Though you can post anonymously, I urge you to create a user ID and password on the registration page so that you can edit past postings and keep a personal sighting list.

After creating an account, click on the link marked This Month to see a list of birds previously sighted in the current month.

The monthly bird lists are a great aid when embarking on an expedition, simply print the list and take it with you to help with identification.

You can also select other months to see how the bird population changes over the year, or you can select any of the individual birds for more details, pictures, calls etc.

Selecting the Bird List link will take you to a full listing of all the birds observed in the upper mountains, wile the Articles Page contains short stories and essays on the gentle art of avian observation.

The Links page lists other sites which may be of interest to bird observers, while the Feedback link leads to a form for dropping me a line. Praise is always appreciated, but I'm keenly interested in critisism, complaints and suggestions - so please do visit this page and fill it out.

Just knowing someone visited is a boost some days. Come in and explore - leave a comment or upload a picture and help promote this most excellent of activities: Bird Watching in the Blue Mountains.
